OK, so probably a lot of you by now are familiar with the Plaxico Burress incident.  But in case some of you have been living under a rock for the past week, here's a short synopsis of what happened.  On Friday night around 1:20 AM Plexico accidentally shot himself in the right thigh at a Manhattan nightclub.  He arrived at New York Presbyterian Hospital at 2:04 A.M. and left 11 hours later after being treated.  The hospital failed to report the gunshot wound as required by law after hospital personel recognized Burress, and one doctor has been suspended.  Even despite Plexico checking in under a false name--Harris Smith, in order to try and keep this information private.  This past Monday, he was charged with two felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and released on a $100,000 bond.  A grand jury will hear evidence and make a decision on whether Burress will be indicted. Illegal possession of a firearm carries a sentence of 3½ to 15 years in jail.

So those are the facts.  Obviously we all know Plexico is an idiot.  I mean seriously, what professional athlete who catches the game winning TD in Super Bowl XLII just thinks he can shoot himself in the leg and NOBODY will find out about it?  I mean he's PLEXICO BURRESS for god's sake.  If he was a third-string lineman who never plays, yeah, maybe he could have been treated without anybody knowing.  But when you're as high profile of an athlete as Plexico is, you're going to be recognized and you're every move will be scrutinized.  Those are the consequences you must learn to live with when you get paid millions of dollars to play a game.  And by the way, why was he even carrying a gun in the first place?  I understand it was because he was carrying a lot of "ice" but I don't know about you, if I want to go to a club but it requires me to have to carry a weapon in order to make myself feel safe I'm probably not going to that club.  Heck, you know what I would do?  I'd take that $35 million dollar contract I just signed this past year, I'd invite a bunch of people over and simulate a club atmosphere.  And I wouldn't even need to carry my gun.

But here's the question I pose to you tonight.  We've seen this kind of behavior before with professional athletes getting in trouble with the law.  Michael Vick, O.J. Simpson (allegedly), Danny Heatley (of the NHL), Adam Jones and now Plexico.  And for all of those that I've just named, they've either gotten off with reduced and/or dismissed cases simply because of who they are.  Is it fair that athletes, just because of their high profile in society, get special treatment when they commit crimes?  We see it happen all the time and I for one am sick of it.

I'll give you an example of what I mean.  Imagine for a second, that we're Danny Heatley, NHL star.  I realize some of you probably stopped reading right there because I'm talking hockey, but stay with me for a second.  There we are driving our Ferrari 360 Modena down some road when we lose control and slam into a wall.  Both us, and our passenger, teammate Dan Snyder, are ejected from the car.  We'd suffer a broken jaw, concussion, three torn knee ligaments and a few other injuries but for Snyder it's much worse.  He'd suffer a skull fracture and die six days later.  When we're charged with second-degree vehicular homicide which carries a sentence of 3-15 years in some states, we instead, get three-years probation which carries no jail time because we took a plea deal.  Sounds like we got off pretty easy considering we killed someone.

Now imagine you're you.  If you would have committed the same crime the exact same way Heatley did, do you know where you'd be right now?  That's right, you'd be in jail.  No questions asked.  Whereas Danny Heatley could go up to the judge and say, "your honor, I'm very sorry for what I did.  But I have an important Eastern Conference Finals game against the Flyers tonight and my team really needs me."  You on the other hand, can't say anything.  It's not like you could say, "your honor, I work really hard at my job and tonight, I'm supposed to be volunteering at the soup kitchen feeding the homeless."  You know what the judge is going to say?  He's going to sentence you, then say, "well you should have thought before you acted."

It is such a double standard the way athletes are treated compared to normal citizens.  They get preferential treatment just because of who they are.  They could be the worst scum of the earth.  But if they're a vital part of your team's chances at winning a championship, their crimes are somehow overshadowed.  Suddenly the success of the team means more than whatever crime was committed.  Just once, I'd like to see some judicial figure actually stand up to an athlete and give him the normal sentence any other Joe-Schmo would get had he committed the same crime.  And no, O.J.'s latest arrest doesn't count.  

In the end though, I know as much as I complain, nothing will ever change.  Professional athletes will always get preferential treatment over everyone else.  It's just the way of life.  Is it fair?  Of course not.  But because everyday citizens are jealous of the things Plexico Burress can do on the field and the money he makes doing it, they're willing to forgive more of the time than with others.  It's just another example of how screwed up our society really is.

Word association time.  When I hear the name "Bashir", first word that comes to my mind is "coward".  Who walks out on a six man tag match and leaves their partners high and dry?  i guess Bashir showed that huge yellow streak up his back by not getting in the ring.  Sting looks more puzzled this week than he did last week.  Did anyone notice when he referred to a "family', he did not mention the Main Event Mafia?  He just mentioned that we will see Sunday how a family is supposed to work.  Sting just keeps me wondering and scratching my head.  Christy Hemme got a huge assisted win over Awesome Kong in a mixed tag match.  She now has a boatload of confidence heading into her chance at the Knockout's title this Sunday.  Beer Money was getting Abyss hammered?  I'll say this, Abyss is a funny "drunk".  I thought Jackie was gonna toss her cookies after she kissed Abyss.  She had it coming if you think about it.  For my TNA Impact Star of the Week, I give it to Rhino for his huge win over Sting.  This win gives the Frontline a huge boost going into Final Resolution in that 8 man tag team match.  For my TNA Impact Loser of the Week, I give it to Kurt "Wipe Your" Angle.  Angle crossed the line when he mentioned Jarrett's wife and kids.  You don't do that to a man like Jeff Jarrett.  And who does Angle thinks he is kidding trying to intimidate Mick Foley?  Does he need a reminder as to who Mick Foley is and what he has accomplished in the wrestling industry?  He better get his mind off of Foley and Jarrett and get his mind on Rhino or he will get gored right out of TNA.  This Sunday before Final Resolution, I will breakdown all the matches and give my predictions right here.
